Intertrigo

  • Represents an inflammatory condition of skin folds with redness, malodour, itch and tenderness
  • Humidity and friction play an important role
  • Fungal or bacterial infection may trigger or worsen an intertrigo
  • Additional risk factors include: excessive sweating, diabetes, overweight and other health problems characterised by immune deficiencies
  • Can coexist with allergic or irritant contact dermatitis
  • When fissuring is present, the areas affected can be very painful
  • The doctor will perform a bacterial swab or skin scraping if suspects infection
  • Skin biopsy should be reversed when diagnosis is uncertain or treatment is failing
