Intertrigo

Represents an inflammatory condition of skin folds with redness, malodour, itch and tenderness
Humidity and friction play an important role
Fungal or bacterial infection may trigger or worsen an intertrigo
Additional risk factors include: excessive sweating, diabetes, overweight and other health problems characterised by immune deficiencies
Can coexist with allergic or irritant contact dermatitis
When fissuring is present, the areas affected can be very painful
The doctor will perform a bacterial swab or skin scraping if suspects infection
Skin biopsy should be reversed when diagnosis is uncertain or treatment is failing
