Intertrigo
- Represents an inflammatory condition of skin folds with redness, malodour, itch and tenderness
- Humidity and friction play an important role
- Fungal or bacterial infection may trigger or worsen an intertrigo
- Additional risk factors include: excessive sweating, diabetes, overweight and other health problems characterised by immune deficiencies
- Can coexist with allergic or irritant contact dermatitis
- When fissuring is present, the areas affected can be very painful
- The doctor will perform a bacterial swab or skin scraping if suspects infection
- Skin biopsy should be reversed when diagnosis is uncertain or treatment is failing
