- Ringworm or Tinea represents a fungal infection
- Has different names according to the body area affected as follows:
- Tinea corporis (fungal infection on body surface other than feet, groin, scalp, face, beard)
- Tinea pedis (infection on foot)
- Tinea cruris (infection in the groin area)
- Tinea capitis (infection of the scalp)
- Tinea unguium (infection of the nail)
- A low immune system may be the cause of persistent fungal infections
- Diagnosis is made clinically most times, but some patients will require skin scraping and fungal culture
- Topical or oral antifungal drugs are highly effective
