Exfoliation is a quick and effective procedure that helps to keep skin healthy. In just a couple of days, your skin accumulates dead skin cells along with other natural skin waste products. As these waste products build up on the surface, your skin becomes dull and can appear sluggish and tired. Exfoliation is the application of products that remove this waste and restore your skin’s natural beauty. After exfoliation, your face feels smoother to the touch. Don’t be tempted to over exfoliate as this might not be suitable for your skin type!

Exfoliants have been used since ancient times. Cleopatra is famous for using natural exfoliants. With a wide range of exfoliants available, it’s better to ask which one would be more suitable according to your skin type. Few examples of exfoliants are: chemical ones, mechanical exfoliants, enzymes as exfoliants, scrubs. Some can be a mix of any of the above.

Be gentle with your skin when exfoliating. If you use a heavy hand or an exfoliant too frequently the skin will require more time to heal. For some skin types, it’s tempting to overdo it, but avoid this at all costs. You could create another skin problem such as cortisol overload. The stress of over-exfoliating causes an increase in your cortisol levels, which has negative impact on your health and skin. If your skin turns red, then it’s probably more than your skin needs.

The best time to use an exfoliant is in the evening. First, cleanse your face, then apply the exfoliant. Remove the exfoliant, then continue with your moisturizer. Some exfoliants are included in cleansing products and in moisturizers. However, daily exfoliation isn’t necessary for any skin type. If you want to use a combined product, such as a cleanser with either a chemical or physical exfoliant, only use it two or three times a week. On the off days, use a non-exfoliating cleanser.

If you have acne you might have the tendency to over exfoliate thinking this will help with keeping the oiliness under control. But this isn’t true and it actually can stimulate overproduction of sebum. Exfoliating 2-3 times per week is maximum that is recommended for acne prone skin. Also, it’s important the type of product that you use and the way procedure is performed. Use circular pattern movements. Don’t hesitate to ask your dermatologist which exfoliant is most appropriate for your skin type!
